In roughly 1984 the BBC embarked upon an ambitious project to get a ‚Domesday Book‘ together using its Acorn platform. The plan was to involve schools and colleges across the nation, compiling and collating facts and figures about the area around them and their own lives, both historical and the present day. The aim was to create a library of information that could be put onto Laser Discs – a medium gaining in popularity at the time because of the film industry. Players were becoming increasingly popular with movie buffs and the cost of discs was coming down.

The PLATO system was created in 1960 at the University of Illinois. Initially it ran as a one-terminal system connected to the ILLIAC computer. By 1963, the system was running on a CDC 1604 with multiple simultaneous users. By 1972, the system had expanded to run a thousand simultaneous users on a CDC CYBER mainframe. Control Data Corporation began marketing PLATO commercially in 1976, resulting in PLATO system installations in dozens of cities around the world. Many of these systems were interconnected, enabling email and remote logins through the network. For nearly ten years, there were more users on PLATO than there were on ARPANET, the precursor to the Internet.

Ein System, das wie es aussieht, viele Dinge schon hatte als es das Internet gerade so gab. Zum Beispiel Chat und E-Mail zwischen den Benutzern, in späteren System-Versionen auch Emojis, die durch das „Überdrucken“ von Zeichen hergestellt wurden. Das Buch dazu, The Friendly Orange Glow, steht schon länger auf meiner Leseliste.

(prior art ist ein Begriff aus dem amerikanischen Patentrecht. Grob gesagt, wenn ich ein Patent anmelden will und jemand anderes verweist darauf, dass es sowas ja schon länger gibt, habe ich gleich verloren. Auf deutsch etwa: Stand der Technik.)

The 432 provided hardware support for object-oriented programming, built around an unforgeable object pointer called an Access Descriptor. Almost every structure in a 432 program and in the system itself is a separate object. The processor provided fine-grain security and access control by checking every object access to ensure that the user had permission and was not exceeding the bounds of the object. This made buffer overruns and related classes of bugs impossible, unlike modern processors.

Schwarzer Turm ist ein Weimarer Verlag für Manga und Comics, der unter anderem Olivia Vieweg und ihre Dicke Katze Cartoons verlegt. Der verbundene Freibeutershop bietet zu den Büchern noch allerhand nützlichen Merchandise an, wie z.B. Kaffeepötte und Kuschelkatzen, Kalender, Postkarten und Notizblöcke. Und sehr freundlich im Mailverkehr sind sie auch.
